Thailand: The Octopus Card - A Must-Have for Budget Travelers
So, someone out there thinks the Octopus card isn't necessary? Hmm, maybe they're rolling in dough! 😉
This one's for us budget travelers. Trust me, get yourself an Octopus card.
Getting Around Hong Kong on a Budget
If you're feeling flush, a taxi from the airport to Tsim Sha Tsui might set you back around a cool million! But for us, there's the trusty bus. Head to the airport exit and hop on the A21 bus. It'll take you straight to the main drag, running from Mong Kok to Tsim Sha Tsui, for a mere 36.3 HKD. Bargain!
Bus travel in Hong Kong is a breeze. You pay a flat fare regardless of how far you travel, and each person needs their own Octopus card. No need to fumble with cash for every single trip! Visa cards work too, in case you forget your card.
Why the Octopus Card is Essential
Think of the Octopus card like your very own MoMo. You can use it to pay for almost everything. Food, shopping, you name it! It's incredibly convenient.
Money Matters
No need to exchange all your money beforehand. Change some in Vietnam, and then exchange more in Hong Kong, where the rates are often better. I saw rates like 3.4 or 3.5 HKD for every 3.33 VND! Exchanging large amounts back home can lead to losses, especially when dealing with smaller denominations.
Octopus Card for iPhone Users
iPhone users, download the Octopus app! You can top up your card with a credit card (it'll be in USD), then add it to your iPhone wallet just like a Visa card. Super convenient.
One thing to note: if you refund your digital Octopus card after your trip, you'll lose about 11 HKD (around 33-35k VND) in fees. Personally, I find the digital card much more convenient than the physical one. Buying a physical card means buying a new one, then trying to find someone to sell it to when you leave (and potentially getting ripped off). Just paying the fee is easier.
Budgeting with the Octopus Card
Expect to spend around 250-300 HKD for bus and MRT travel using the Octopus card for a 5-day trip. Food expenses are extra, of course!
Note: Techcombank cards don't let you top up, but other banks might.
Tips for a Great Trip
Remember to wear comfortable shoes! You'll be doing a lot of walking in Hong Kong. Pack a spare pair of flip-flops too, just in case.
Happy travels! If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments. This was my first trip, so hopefully, it helps you travel without stress.
