A Taste of Singapore in Saigon: The Straits Restaurant
Having explored quite a few Singaporean chicken rice spots in Saigon, I rarely find one that nails the full experience with three dipping sauces: chili, dark soy, and ginger.
This restaurant, formerly Sky28, recently rebranded as The Straits, a kitchen & bar concept boasting a stunning view from the 28th floor, overlooking the heart of Saigon.
What I particularly appreciate is the menu. It's packed with the best of Singaporean cuisine. Perhaps this is because the owner, Keppel Land, is also from Singapore (with a significant presence in Vietnam, including Saigon Centre, Sedona Suites, and Empire City). This appears to be an opportunity to showcase their culinary heritage. The flavors are impeccable, thanks to the chef, who is also from Singapore. The pricing is surprisingly reasonable, especially considering it's in a 5-star hotel with panoramic Saigon views. Expect to spend around 300,000 - 400,000 VND per person, and even less for lunch, with set lunch options starting from just 220,000 VND.
Must-Try Dishes:
- Hainanese chicken rice
- Laksa, with its fragrant coconut milk base
- Nasi lemak, a Malaysian culinary classic
- Rojak, a common Singaporean/Malaysian salad featuring fried dough fritters tossed in a shrimp paste sauce
- Hor fun, similar to the stir-fried noodles you find in Chinatown
Overall, it's a great value for those who love Singaporean food. It's even more affordable than some mid-range Singaporean places in Saigon, and the experience is far superior!
