Independence Palace: A Symbol of Victory

This historic landmark stands as a testament to the triumph of the anti-American resistance, the liberation of the South, and the momentous national reunification of Vietnam. It holds a significant place in the country's history.

Originally known as Norodom Palace, it also served as the Palace of the Indochina Governor-General. Construction began in 1868 and was completed in 1871.

After 1954, the palace became the residence and workplace of Ngo Dinh Diem, the President of South Vietnam, and his family. He chose to rename it the Independence Palace.

In 1962, the palace suffered severe damage from bombings. President Diem ordered the remaining structure demolished, and a new palace was to be built. The design was the work of Ngo Viet Thu, an architect with Western training. Sai Gon engineers oversaw the construction, and it was finished in 1966.
