Farewell to Taiwan's Highest Starbucks
After two decades, the Starbucks nestled high in Taiwan's mountains is closing.
A Landmark's Final Days
The Starbucks at Qingjing Farm in Nantou County, known for its stunning location, will shut its doors permanently after Monday. This particular Starbucks, opening in 2003, held the distinction of being located at the highest elevation in Taiwan, a remarkable 1,743 meters above sea level. For many travelers, it was an iconic spot, a must-visit landmark within the picturesque mountain region.
The Influence of Tourism
Reports suggest the decision to close may be tied to visitor numbers. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Qingjing Farm attracted over a million tourists each year. While there's been a rebound, the yearly count has only exceeded 800,000 once since the pandemic began, in 2022.
Some local businesses express concerns about the impact of Starbucks leaving, suggesting it might signal a decline in the area's appeal to visitors. However, the Taiwan Good Coffee Company is set to take over the spot, planning to offer visitors quality coffees and teas.
