A USB-C Upgrade for Your iPhone: A New Case from the Modder Who Beat Apple
Remember the engineer who made headlines by swapping the Lightning port on an iPhone for a USB-C connection? Well, he's back, and this time he's offering a solution for everyone.
Ken Pillonel, the person behind the original modification, has now designed a phone case that transforms the Lightning port on older iPhones into a USB-C port. The aim? To combat the problem of planned obsolescence, giving users a reason to keep their devices longer.
"This time, I'm turning that one-off DIY mod into a real product you can own," Pillonel shared in a recent YouTube video. "This isn't just a hack anymore; it's the biggest project I've ever done."
Key Features of the New iPhone Case
The case is available for "most models" at obsoless.com, with prices ranging from $45 to $55. It boasts some interesting features, including:
- MagSafe charging support
- Data transfer capabilities
- Compatibility with CarPlay
- 9V fast charging (an improvement over his initial modification)
The 2021 USB-C hack required the cable to be oriented a specific way to trigger fast charging. This new case removes that limitation.
Please note that not all features available with the Lightning or USB-C connection might be supported.
